If You Own This Baby Stroller, Your Child Could Be in Danger

Posted on April 12,2021 in Product Liability

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for approximately 16,000 baby strollers due to entrapment, strangulation, and fall risks. Manufactured by Costway of Fontana, California, the strollers were sold on Amazon and the company’s site from May 2016 to December 2019. The Recall was issued on June 25, 2020, after CPSC found that 3 of the models had violated federal requirements for strollers and carriages.

Serious Risks Posed to Young Children

With the defective Costway strollers, a child’s body can pass through an opening between the seat bottom and the activity tray, or between the restraint and the seat bottom, posing the risk of entrapment or strangulation. Additionally, the location of the crotch restraint creates an opening that poses a fall hazard to children.

The recalled stroller models are:

  • Face to Face Double Stroller – #BB4690 sold in gray
  • Infant Double Stroller – #BB4613 sold in black
  • Infant Double Stroller – #BB4476 sold in black, red, and gray colors

Consumers with the recalled baby strollers should stop using them and get in touch with Costway to learn how they can obtain a full refund, including the original shipping cost and taxes. Costway has been contacting buyers directly since the recall.

Thousands of Children Injured by Strollers Each Year

Thousands of infants and young children head to the emergency room every year as a result of injuries caused by baby carriers and strollers. On average, 17,000 children under the age of 5 are taken to the ER each year with injuries ranging from mild to severe. The most common injuries were bruises and bumps on the head and face. Some of the patients had more serious conditions, such as traumatic brain injuries and broken bones, of which a small percentage required hospitalization. With stroller recalls increasing, parents need to stay informed about defective products to keep their little ones safe.

In June 2020, Umbrella Strollers manufactured by Hawaiian children’s apparel store Island Wear were recalled after they were found to pose a fall and choking hazard for children. In January 2020, Baby Trend recalled four models of their strollers because the hinge joints can release, creating a fall hazard. In March of the same year, Thule issued a recall of about 4,800 strollers sold between July 2018 and June 2020. The handlebar can detach from the stroller frame, posing a risk of injury to children.
